A CRACKING BUSINESS
When Steve Cullum pitched to a room full of Angel investors in April 2010, he didn’t know that 3½ weeks later the money he needed to take his business forward would be in the bank.
Angels Den, at its first SpeedFunding event in Leeds, introduced Steve to some of Yorkshire’s top Business Angels. In a three minute individual pitch to each Angel, Steve gave a short summary of his Hog Roast business. “I had never done anything like this before and was totally green to it but I surprised myself by how much I enjoyed it,” said Steve. “The Angels were just friendly people interested in hearing about my company so I quickly relaxed into it and started having fun.”
Lincolnshire-based ‘Steve Cullum’s Hog Roast Machines’ have gained an enviable reputation already. They are made almost entirely in heavy-gauge stainless steel and are capable of handling a small suckling pig or one of up to 90 kilos. They can also spit-roast up to 40 chickens at one time.
Almost half of the Angels present were interested in further talks with Steve and follow up meetings took place with four of them. Steve finally chose the Angel that he felt he had most synergy with. “I am delighted with the result,” said Steve. “I now have enough finance to take my business to the next level. I have a marvellous investor on board, who is local to me, and is always on the end of the phone if I need him and I can plan for the future with confidence.”
Steve speaks to his Angel on a weekly basis to update him on progress. “He is basically happy to let me get on with it,” explains Steve.
Steve has impressive sales forecasts for the next few years and is already receiving international orders.
“I would whole-heartedly recommend Angels Den. It is an extremely quick and professional service and I think it’s safe to say that I am now happy as a pig in muck and hot to trot!” said Steve.
